Presented by: Tauranga Jazz Society
Classical and jazz worlds find common ground.
American alto-saxophonist Dick Oatts combines with The New Zealand String Quartet under the musical direction of iconic Kiwi jazz musician Rodger Fox in a concert that pays homage to legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker and his most memorable work Charlie Parker with Strings.
Featuring jazz standards capturing the romantic and melodic side of this Bebop giant - hear swinging rhythms with lush strings and a twist of Bebop.
Dick Oatts is an international featured soloist best known as the lead alto player in the Thad Jones| Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra from the late 70s and still holds down that role in the present day incarnation the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.

“Dick Oatts playing contains a wonderful mix of influences, a direct line from Sonny Stitt, Johnny Hodges, Cannonball, Charlie Parker and Lee Konitz; even a hint of the 70s soulful rasp of David Sanborn in his younger days, mixed with his own ever-evolving, harmonically probing sensibility.” – Gareth Lockrane, London Jazz News
