‘Moanaroa’ is about Belonging. It is about a 12 year old girl who has a secret. She can talk to crabs. Moanaroa is kaitiaki (guardian) of the crabs of Rangataua Bay—though she doesn’t yet know it. This is a rare gift once held by her late mother and passed down by Tangaroa.
A battle brews between Tangaroa and the dark force of Whiro. Moanaroa finds herself caught between their rivalry. Whiro launches a wave of algae to choke the bay, followed by an army of invader crabs threatening the delicate balance of the ecosystem.
Guided by her ancestors, Moanaroa discovers her power, her purpose, and her voice. With courage, heart, and the strength of her whakapapa, Moanaroa leads the crabs of Rangataua Bay in a powerful stand. When Whiro delivers his final blow—beaching whales in the bay—the entire community unites to restore balance and protect the treasures of their moana.
